Growing up in the hood of Brooklyn, New York, the “concrete jungle”, it is never easy. You’re surrounded by all the things that make you who you are and what not to become. I witnessed killings and crack sales right in front of me, but nevertheless stayed focused on my dream to one day move out and provide my family with the things we never had. Would I change all of that? Not for the world! I love the hood; it has been nothing but good to me. I was never fearful for my life because I was able to understand the streets, and I learned how to stay away from the bad and focus on the good. Ever since I could remember, I always wanted to be a rapper. I use to listen to the radio waiting for a break in the music and then I would act like I was on the track. Hip-hop was the hood’s Rock n’ Roll! My family was very much into music and everyone had a talent in some shape or form. One day my cousin and I were playing at my grandmother’s house with walkie talkies, rapping to each other pretending to be Biggie Smalls, Jay Z and Big Daddy Kane. They were the music icons from Brooklyn, but running around the house, my cousin and I felt like we had the world in the palm of our hands. In our minds, we were rapping with the best of them. At that point I knew we had talent. The verses flowed naturally, and I loved the play on words that a rap song enabled me to create. I eventually got my chance to perform when I was about 10 years old at a neighborhood block party. While I was performing, I lost track of the time and forgot where I was. I didn’t know how I was doing or what I was saying because I was so lost in the fun of it all.
